In the gold medal game at the last IBAF Intercontinental Cup, 23 year old Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez completely dominated his opponents from the Netherlands. The criollos prevailed by 4-1. Gonzalez pitched eight innings and only allowed two hits while striking out six opponents.
The first two Cuban runs were manufactured in the bottom of the third inning. A double by Jose Dariel Abreu was followed by an Ariel Pestano hit. Two men on base with none out. Giorvis Borroto followed with a bases clearing double, and Cuba took the lead, which would never relinquish.
Alexei Bell hit a home-run with one man on base on the bottom of the eighth inning to add two insurance runs. Giorvis Duvergel went three for three in the game. Hector Olivera was selected as the MVP of the Intercontinental Cup.
Holland scored one run in the bottom of the ninth. The bases were loaded and Jonder Martinez came on relief. He put out the fire. Cuba wins the gold.
The game was carried live by Cubavision Internacional. It was nice to be able to enjoy a great baseball game without constant obnoxious commercial interruptions.
Cuba’s 50th National Baseball Series will start next month. The Baseball World Cup will also be played in November. Cuba has qualified for that event.
